Lucian

The city breathes a symphony of shadow and light, nightfall draping its secrets in a velvet cloak. I stand on the edge of a rooftop, watching as the streets pulse below, alive with the innocent and the oblivious. A cool breeze carries whispers from the dark corners, murmurs of unrest that prickle my skin. Something wicked this way comes.

"Lucian," his name slithers off my tongue like a serpent's hiss, "Cassian Devereaux."

At a distant crossroads, he materializes, as if conjured by the city's own twisted heart. The crowd parts for him, an enigmatic figure wrapped in the allure of danger. His jet-black hair is a shadow's caress against his pale skin, and those eyes—red like the very blood coursing through the veins of the mortals he toys with—lock onto mine from across the chasm of space.

"Evening, Lucian," he calls out, voice velvety dark, yet edged with a razor-sharp threat. "Enjoying the view?"

I tense, my wings itching beneath my coat. "Cassian. To what do I owe the displeasure?"

He smiles, and it's like watching thorns grow over a grave. "Just passing through. Though we both know that's never quite true."

My gaze holds his, searching for a hint of his motive. I have a suspicion he's somehow found out about Isadora and me and wishes to fuck with us (because nothing gives Cassian greater pleasure than tainting love), but Cassian is an enigma, a storm dressed in human form, his intentions as unreadable as the language of stars. I can't help but admire his brazen confidence, even as it sets every alarm blaring in my head.

"Leaving so soon?" My words are a challenge, wrapped in false nonchalance.

"Patience," he purrs, taking a step forward. The streetlights flicker in his wake, as if bowing to his whims. "The night is still young."

I clench my fists, feeling the ancient power within me stir. He is a tempest, and I, the shore bracing for impact. Desire and dread entwine within me, coiling around my resolve. Cassian has always had that effect—a magnetic pull that disarms even as it warns of the peril.

"Indeed," I reply, my watchful eyes tracking his every move. "It is."

"Tell me," Cassian drawls, tilting his head ever so slightly, "does the angel fear a little chaos?"

"No," I retort, my voice steady despite the quickening beat of my heart. "But he does despise those who unleash it without care."

"Ah," he chuckles, the sound like shattered glass. "But where's the fun in restraint?"

"Fun has its time and place," I shoot back, the protective instinct for the city and Isadora burning fierce within me. "This isn't it."

"Always the guardian, Lucian." His tone drips with mock admiration. "How...noble."

He steps closer, and the air crackles with the electricity of his presence. The city seems to hold its breath, waiting, anticipating the clash of wills that hangs heavy between us.

"Watch closely then," he whispers, his lips curving in a dangerous smile. "For I intend to show you a spectacle."

And in that moment, with the promise of chaos glinting in Cassian's eyes, I know the balance of this world precariously rests upon what happens next.
